“He’s a warden with a soft spot for prisoners? That must be a first. Is that why they get to graze around in the yard instead of just having a hand removed?”

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
(Figured out the issue with the dice, Karina. You most likely put in "5" for the number of dice rolls, thinking it would add +5 to your roll. Next time just say what you're rolling + your modifier. Or use invisible castle again - doesn't matter.)
Basilius:
Karina:
Both:
Norven leaps to his feet and shuffles back to the stool before sitting down. He's still grinning and the shackles remain intact.
"I wonder if your Adaria can save you now, cleric. If not... perhaps you will be the one who needs forgiveness."
Balthan coughs violently and crawls to the corner of the room, then slumps back against the wall. His complexion has become pale and his lower lip trembles slightly.
Norven turns to face both of you, shifting his gaze every so often.
"A kid and a... hmmm," he eyes Karina up and down, smirking, "Lovely young woman. You could be of use to me, miss, as it's so... so... very lonely in this cell. It's been a very long time since I forced myself upon a woman. Too long, in fact."
He chuckles wickedly and leans back against the stool. "Perhaps you wish revenge for what I've done? Oh... but you don't know what I've done. You'll want revenge when you find out, rest assured, so... why not speed up my inevitable demise? Your order won't strike down innocents, but... I'm hardly innocent, now am I?"
He looks to both of you with his long hair still covering most of his face. "So what will it be?"
-----------------------------------
Ceria:
Basilius:
- Spoiler:
- Your position in relation to the scuffle prevents you from seeing what's happening beneath the pile of bodies.
Also, despite trying to grab the barbarian's attention, he merely snickers at you.
Karina:
- Spoiler:
- As you rush to Balthan's aid, you see Norven thrust something into the old cleric's chest. Although you're unable to make out what it is, the object is small, about the size of a small coin, and it seems to absorb into Balthan's body.

Ceria:
- Spoiler:
- "I believe so. It's not common knowledge but," he leans in slightly, his voice lowering to a whisper, "The warden was a street urchin himself as a boy, so he knows the lengths the poor must go to in order to survive."
"Do not think of him as a pushover, however. His opinion on the non-violent criminals aside, he has absolutely no love or pity for those detained in the other towers. He'd give them the most painful execution ever if it wasn't for that toothless old cleric.
... That poor bastard thinks everyone has some good in them. Sometimes he even walks into the cells of 'B' tower prisoners, unarmed, and prays for them. Suicide if you ask me."
Just then the chef, a plump middle-aged man with patchy facial hair and dull brown eyes, walks down the staircase carrying two trays of soup. He sets it down on the table, nodding to Ames.
"This is our chef and supervisor of the workers here, Emmanuel. Manny or 'Tubs,' if you're his friend."
The cook grumbles at the mention of 'Tubs,' then stomps back up the staircase.

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Quickly taking a spoon in hand Ceria scooped up some of the broth and ate it. It wasn’t the finest she had ever tasted, but hours of being deprived of food made it taste better then it might have on another day. “One can only expect so much of a prison, I suppose.” She looked to thank the cook but he had already stomped off after his introduction. “He seems like a pleasant fellow.”
She spooned up another bite, mulling over Ames’ explanation of the warden and the priest. “If he’s spent the majority of his life in service of Adaria, I doubt he minds if some prison ruffian takes his life. He’s doing the work of his goddess, and his murderer would just be sending him to her bask in Her Grace.”

Impotent
Ashen faced, Basilius puts himself between the madman and the clerics.Admin wrote:He looks to both of you with his long hair still covering most of his face. "So what will it be?
- I see you are quite a bad boy against girls and old people. You will die honorless, executed as a dog. I'm sure your ancestors will love that.
Basilius, without taking his eyes off the madman, tells the young cleric:
- Take him out and ask for help!
His voice shaken with anger …

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Cash curls up like a dog grabbed by the nape of its neck. Grasping the man's hand to support his body weight, the diminuitive janitor makes his next move.
"Thank goodness you got here so quickly! The Warden is having a heart attack!"
He begins pointing at the others and barks orders to them one-by-one.
"You there, elevate his feet! I've already tied the laces together to save time. And you two! Hear that snoring? He's about to swallow his tongue, so move quickly! You there, go boil some water! Now let me down so I may find a doctor; a man's life (and our employment) is at stake!"
And with that, the Rogue attempts to wiggle free before slipping through the Humans and dashing down the hallway.

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Ceria
Cash
- Spoiler:
Ames starts eating his own soup and, despite his hardened appearance, seems rather civilized and proper. There's no slurping of the soup, no slouching, and his forearms are set on the table -- not his elbows.
A stark contrast to the other two guards present who are eating loudly nearby.
"Another Adarian-lover, huh. Seems all you young girls are tied to her in one way or another," he says after finishing a spoonful of soup. "And as much as I'd like to believe that there's redemption for these evil men, I just don't see it. The risk he takes is downright foolish."
"In any case... does this mean you're the young lady the cleric was expecting? While you're not exactly dressed like the clergy, I... well..." He frowns a little. "Just want to repeat that being around that man is dangerous. I wouldn't want you to get hurt."
Cash
- Spoiler:
- The large guard arches a brow from beneath his open-helm. While he doesn't immediately agree with you, he motions for another guard to enter the tower -- just as you begin to try and squirm your way out, ultimately failing horribly.
He grunts, thrusting you into the ground with his knee to your back. Not a lot of pressure is given, but enough to hold you in place, and he then calls out to the other guards:
"This halfling's like a slippery little worm! Someone get me some shackles!"
Just then, the guard inside the tower exits, carrying the warden's limp form. "L-lieutenant! Looks like he is asleep, but the secret chest is open! This halfling has something to do with it, I kno--"
"You're paid to be a soldier, not an investigator! Argh..." The larger guard, presumably the Lieutenant, rubs his temples.
One guard who had left to retrieve the shackles returns at this point, offering them to the Lieutenant. He promptly latches the shackles on your legs and wrists, then stands up, throws you over his shoulder, and grunts.
"Take the warden to his office, soldier. The rest of you: form a perimeter on me. Fifteen feet away -at most-. This little bastard isn't like his lazy, good for nothing brethren. Take him seriously, boys."
One of the guards forming the perimeter laughs. "Oh, but how can you take a half-man seriously? They smoke all day and lounge around, and... they're so tiny. Do you think we should use a musket-ball as a weight on his shackles, rather than a cannon ball?"
The other guards roar into laughter and the Lieutenant furrows his brows. "Once we're done here, I'll make you wish you kept that damn mouth of yours shut, Samson. Now, where's the Captain?"
The guard named Samson winces. "Saw him heading to the barracks with some girl, Lieutenant."
"Fine."
Suddenly you find yourself being carried across the courtyard, surrounded at all sides by guards.
"So... halfling..." The lieutenant says, "I need some answers. First off, your name, and second, what really happened in there. We might be a bit more lenient if you tell the truth."

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Shivering with disgust over the barbarian's leer and concerned for the high cleric, Karina proceeded to go near Balthan, while keeping well away from Norven as she could.
She did briefly wondered what the strange object that the Northman had pressed against the high cleric was but she figured such things will have to wait until Balthan was safe and Norven subdued.
"If you will not embrace Adaria's light then be forever consumed by Vazrul's darkness. Tis a poor bargain indeed." Karina said, her mace at the ready in case the barbarian tried to attack her.
(will attempt a Diplomacy check while she speaks.)

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Norven looks to Basilius, growling. "My ancestors? Do not act as though you know my people or their ways, boy. If anything, they will envy me for starting--"
He stops suddenly, narrowing his eyes. "I have said too much already, I think."
His attention then turns to Karina, a smirk crossing his lips. When she speaks, however, his resolve seems to waver slightly. His expression becomes blank.
"Tell me, girl," he says after a while, "What has Adaria given me in life? A small home in the middle of frozen tundra? Even the greenskins have it better than my people, and they're slaves to the dwarves. Slaves!"
His eyes narrow. "She has offered nothing. Vazrul, however..."
Once again he grins. "Well, it doesn't matter now, does it? You'll find out soon enough. Now... I think you best take your master outside, he's looking a little pale."
Just then a guard from downstairs rushes in. "What's happening?! I heard commotion and--" His eyes widen when he notices the cleric.
"G-get him out of here! Go to the 'C' tower, there's beds and fresh water and food there. Just... just go! I'll take care of this bastard."

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
“Your concern for my well-being is touching, although you have me mistaken for someone else. I know my prayers and occasionally can be found in a chapel, but I’m not a disciple of Adaria. Nor do I have any desire to meet any of the prisoners you have locked up here, and I certainly wouldn’t be praying for their salvation. Much like yourself, I think the prisoners are a lost cause.” Ceria dipped her spoon into the bowl, then noticed she had drained the contents. “Well Captain Ames, thank you for the escort and the meal. I must retire to the study in Tower D.”
“Back to the extra space you and your men covet. He is likely not be pleased about that.”
“If I have any further problems during my stay here, I’ll make sure to come to you first.” She pushed back her chair and stood up, putting out her hand to give the Captain a handshake.

Karina shook her head sadly at Norven's outburst and reached to help Balthan up to his feet*.
"Varzul is far less forgiving than Adaria about expecting handouts just for mere lip service. But then you most likely knew that and you shall find out the hard way how much the dark lord truly regards you."
(*That is if Balthan is able to do so.)

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Cash briefly consider coming clean. After all, isn't honesty the best policy?
"Well, there I was just a cleanin' my little heart away, when I notice this box is just a'covered in dust! Well, I figured the good folks of this here jailhouse didn't hire me to sit around and gawk at it, so I..."
He allows himself to go completely slack, followed by a brief moment of silence before continuing in a gravelly, monotone voice.
"We are the collective anguish of all those who have died in this place. These lost souls whose lives were filled with hatred and whose deaths were filled with rage. The Warden thought he could contain us within that pathetic little box.
The Warden has failed. He is with us now.
There is no-one left to protect you.
This tiny body is unsuitable for housing our numbers. Come join us. Life is suffering. Come suffer with us. We have seen Hell, and were too terrible for it. That which was too terrible for Hell shall soon burst outward, and there will be nothing left but blood and bones and pain. YOUR pain.
So long as this body does not pass through the prison's front gate, our power shall continue to return. It is best to join us now. If you do not volunteer, then you will soon be converted... into a puddle of meat."
Another moment of awkward silence ensues before Cash decides to whip his head back around to a normal position.
"... and that's when he hit the floor! So I'm tellin' ya, do what you will with me, but get that poor man to a doctor fast!"

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
(The prologue has been going on for a little longer than I had hoped and I'm sorry if it's been uneventful for some. Rest assured that something big is coming soon, and you'll most likely all be level two once it's all over.)
Cash
Ceria
BOTH:
"What's the meaning of this, Lieutenant Jaromir?"The scar-ridden captain proclaims, folding his arms.
The Lieutenant known as Jaromir frowns, pointing at the small halfling. "This little bastard assaulted the warden, sir. Used 'the box' on him. Crafty little bastard, and slippery like a damn fish, but we managed to get him before he escaped."
The Captain's eyes go wide. "Is the warden okay?!"
The Lieutenant nods. "Rest assured he's fine. Just napping for now, probably."
The Captain nods, obviously relieved. "Ahh. Well, Ceria, you can go now."
Suddenly the Lieutenant coughs into his hand. "Sir, is that wise? She is the soothsayer, correct? They were hired around the same time, if I recall correctly. Perhaps they're working together on something..."
The Captain sighs. "Better safe than sorry, right? Oh... I appologize miss Ceria, but I'm afraid we can't let you leave until we know what's going on."
---------------------------------------
Basilius
Karina
BOTH:
The guard seems anxious. "Go, go! Enough talking, get out of here!"
The second guard from downstairs has now made his way up to the cell. His eyes go wide and, without asking questions, he rushes Karina and Balthan out. Whether Basilius follows is entirely up to him, but the afrorementioned two are then led out to the courtyard.
It's now raining hard, with thunder and lightning and a heavy gust of wind. The guard shields his face with a hand and gasps.
"This storm... it doesn't seem... normal. The lightning is too--" [I]Just then lightning crashes down on one of the high-rising barricades, followed by a roar of thunder. The guard clasps his hands over his ears before straightening up soon after, motioning at the nearby tower.
"We need to hurry. Let's go!"
Cash
- Spoiler:
- The lieutenant continues to carry you over his shoulder, keeping a careful eye on the other guards to make sure the perimeter is good.
Upon hearing your explanation however, he briefly stops.
"You expect me to believe that some ghosts took over our little trap? You silver-tongued little bastard, bet you'd make a great politician for your people."
After a brief moment of contemplation, his eyes go wide. "But the sorcerer held at the top of... and the new girl... that soothsayer... what if..." He muses to himself, before laughing at the ridiculousness of it all and picking up the pace.
Finally you find yourself at the entrance to the "C" tower. One of the lieutenant's guardsmen opens the door and he steps inside, still holding you over his shoulder.
Inside a scar-ridden man and young female are standing, alongside two guards eating near the corner.
(+50 exp for nearly convincing the lieutenant that the chest was haunted.)
Ceria
- Spoiler:
- Ames takes your hand into his own and plants a soft kiss on it, before straightening up and nodding.
"If you are headed back to the study, that means you're the palm reader the warden picked up to study prisoners' belongings, correct? Interesting."
"... In any case, I won't keep you any longer. Safe--"
Just as Ames is about to say his goodbyes, the door is kicked open and a large, burly man steps inside, along with several other guards.
You notice the large man is holding a small halfling on his shoulders, easily mistaken for a frail child.
BOTH:
"What's the meaning of this, Lieutenant Jaromir?"The scar-ridden captain proclaims, folding his arms.

---------------------------------------
Basilius
- Spoiler:
- Norven peers up at you with a smile. "Ah, the radiant knight in his shining armor, trying to stoop to a barbarian's level to get information from him. You really wish to know?"
He snickers. "The beginning of the end, that's what it is."
Karina
- Spoiler:
- You're able to lift Balthan just as Norven replies:
"Mere lip service? Did you not see what I... ah... haha... no... I suppose you did not. You'll understand the extent of my lip service once your kind, wise old cleric mentor..."
He stops himself, shrugging.

As Ames takes Ceria’s hand and kisses it her smile widens. “He knows his courtesies better then most highborn men.” Turning to leave, the guard moved in with the halfing on his shoulders. As the guard implicates that she is working with the halfing, her smile morphs into a scowl. “You think I’m in league with a half-man?! Surely this is a jest that you haze newcomers with. You waste all of our time with your childish pranks.” Ceria folds her arms in a huff, clearly angered by the accusation.

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Karina pondered the barbarian's words as she quickly led Balthan out of the room with the help of the guard. She nearly jumped twice as the roar of the thunderstorm outside seemingly crashed against the walls themselves. Karina gripped her holy symbol tightly before gently taking the high cleric's hand again.
She began her brisk walk down the stairs, being careful not to slip and fall. Outside on the courtyard, the rain was coming down hard, drenching her robes. Thunder and lightning occasionally rupturing the skies in their fury. Karina turned her head to see the guard clapped his ears and she too screamed at the horrible loud sound but then they both recovered and headed toward the tower.
(Once they reached the bottom of the stairs of the other tower, Karina will try to use a Heal check to see if Balthan needs help. I'll do it in my next post.)

Nonplussed by these statements, the Rogue decides a more diplomatic approach.
"Jig's up, sister! Between you seducing this old fart and me grabbing the Warden's keys, I don't think this heist is working out as well as you planned. I say we just come clean about the whole affair and throw ourselves on their mercy."
He turns to the head honcho next to him.
"Good luck with this one. She's a way better liar than I am, not to mention the brains of the outfit."

Re: Prologue: The Citadel
Cash and Ceria:
Basilius and Karina:
------------------
(For everyone [finally]):
"What's the meaning of this?!" Barks the Captain, pushing through Jaromir and his shackled prisoner.
"Ughh... mrghhh..." Is all Balthan can manage, his frail body beginning to feel more and more like dead weight to Karina.
"Bring him upstairs. Hurry, let's not waste time!"
Ames leads both Karina and the old man to the staircase, then waits for them to ascend. He decides to take the rear in the event that they stumble and fall backwards.
Whether Basilius or Ceria follow is entirely up to them. Unfortunately, Cash is a little more... preoccupied, at the moment.
-------------------------
Karina (possibly Basilius and/or Ceria):
Cash (possibly Basilius and/or Ceria):
- Spoiler:
- Lieutenant Jaromir glares at the halfling, then returns his gaze to Ceria. He can't help but flash a slight smile in response to her statement.
"Rest assured I do not, save for the part about you being smarter than him."
He turns his attention to Captain Ames. "And I apologize to you, sir, for quickly accusing your friend. I should know better; you're always a good judge of character."
Ames nods and, just as he's about to speak, the sound of thunder can be heard and the room shakes slightly. His eyebrow raises.
"Quite the storm tonight," Ames notes.
Just as he's about to continue, the door is flung open once more. A young woman is assisting an older man inside. Their attire suggests they're a man and woman of the cloth. The older man seems weak and weary, and his face is incredibly pale.
Followed by them is a guard and a teenager clad in armor.
Basilius and Karina:
- Spoiler:
- Lightning continues to crash down near the Citadel, and the thunderous booms that follow are so powerful that they feel like minor earthquakes. Kanesen is known for it's bad weather, sure, but something about this seems unnatural.
You both finally make it inside the "C" tower, only to discover that it's brimming with people. Two guards are situated near the corner of the room, at a table; a scarred man is standing next to a young woman; three more guards are present, two in the northeast corner and one near the door; and a large, bulky man is standing right in front of you, a shackled halfling slung over his shoulder.

Karina (possibly Basilius and/or Ceria):
- Spoiler:
- The upper level of the tower is furnished almost entirely by beds, hammocks, and bedrolls. There's a small fireplace near the west wall, with a pot of soup boiling near it. A plump man with patchy facial hair stands nearby; Ceria would already know him.
"Damn, damn, damn!" Captain Ames groans, pointing at one of the bigger beds. "I told you, didn't I cleric? Even that Arkitas... damn, he knew it was inevitable, and you've... you've got no one to blame but..."
The Captain holds his tongue, instead peering at Karina.
"You're the assistant he was waiting for, correct? How well do you know medicine?"
Just then Balthan begins to squirm, regardless of whether or not he's been placed on the bed. There's an inhuman grunt that soon follows, and his body goes limp again.
Cash (possibly Basilius and/or Ceria):
- Spoiler:
- Lieutenant Jaromir grunts. "Figures as much. Old man had it coming if you ask me."
He saunters over to the nearby table and sets the shackled Cash down on a seat, then glances around at the plethora of guards present. Does not turn his back to Cash, however, knowing all too well how crafty he is.
"Back to your duties, all of you! Damn, except... uh... you!" He points to a guard. "You, go check on the Warden, then return when you have any news."
Each guard salutes and scurries out the door, even the ones that were already here prior to your arrival.
